Bringing the Artists Back

After reading an article that described how Jackson's Squares rich culture of artists had vanished over the past decade I decided to devote my portion of the master plan towards bringing them back. Much of my Community Design classes' master plan is driven to providing a nexus for the community. In other words a means to invoke a higher quality of pedestrian and communal interaction. Continuing this mentality I've chosen to design an artist colony of sorts through the use of an old brewery's brick remains and landscape.

The Concept:

Establish a deeper sense of community through the use of art and landscape while combining historic site elements with contemporary works. Creating an artist colony would provide an enriching environment for prospective artists to grow and thrive while offering the community an invigorated culture.

The plan and diagrammatic sections above illustrate my design in its current stages. I have deconstructed the existing brewery leaving specific walls as exterior galleries. Beneith them i've directly placed artist studios reflecting inward. This lower level emphasized through strong sectional changes leads to a 9 story tower that reflects back onto the site. Its lower level serves both as a cafe and master interior gallery. The rest of the tower remains heavily devoted to housing artist residents (5-7 per floor) in shared spaces. The 5th floor features a programmatic break into another gallery which connects to created roof garden above a preexisting office building. This feature allows residents and visitors a chance to overlook the artist inspired landscape, a high line of sorts. . . . more to come
